A small group of (fool?) hardy individuals took part in our April 23rd walk at Sam Smith Park despite the rain and strong east wind. An early Chimney Swift flew over the parking lot as we got started giving us hope of more good things to come. The wind, waves and cold made lake viewing difficult, but we managed to find some good birds including Common Loons, Red-necked and Horned Grebes and 5 species of swallow (no Bank).

Working our way north from the lake, we found an Eastern Phoebe, Fox Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, Hermit Thrushes, and a Black-crowned Night-Heron, along with dozens of White-throated Sparrows, Juncos, and both species of Kinglet. It was raining pretty steadily by the time we got to “the bowl” at the north end of the park. The conditions made it tough to pick out the “good” birds from the hundreds of White-throated Sparrows, Juncos, and Kinglets, but we did find a Yellow-rumped Warbler and a singing Eastern Towhee. If the rain had held off for another hour, we would have had a much more pleasant time, but we still managed to tally 43 species.
