We finally had a sunny day for a Bird Walk! After a string of cold and/or wet walks, our outing at Humber Bay on December 9th was a beautiful sunny day. The temperature was just around freezing and the wind was light, which made it a very nice day for December.

We only found 25 species, but they were almost all waterfowl. We found an impressive 17 duck species including Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Duck, and all three species of Merganser. Passerines were notably absent. We saw no starlings, doves, pigeons, or sparrows of any kind.

A Northern Mockingbird put in a silent appearance. They are non-migratory, but they are easily overlooked in the winter because they rarely sing in the cold weather.

Most of the waterfowl stayed out of camera range, so many of the photas aren’t too clear.

This American Coot was feeding in one of the sheltered bays.

This male Hooded Merganser was just beyond camera range, but was the closest one we saw.

There’s always a Mallard willing to pose for a close-up!

As usual, the gulls at the mouth of Mimico Creek were mainly Ring-billed, with a few Herring Gulls mixed in (look for the larger size and pink legs).
