December 2025 Bird Walk
_MG_3908cs6

Garth Riley led our December 6th bird walk at Humber Bay West. We started and ended the walk at Amos Waites Park. Although the temperature was hovering around zero, the wind made it feel much colder.
There were no large flocks of ducks in the bay, but we found a good variety of typical winter waterfowl. There weren’t many gulls yet. They often congregate on the ice that accumulates later in the winter. There was also a notable lack of land birds. Didn’t even see House Sparrows or Starlings!
Among the notable sightings were a beautiful Male American Wigeon hanging out with the Mallards and a few Redheads and Lesser Scaup among the hundreds of Greater Scaup.
Non-bird sightings included four very large and unafraid beavers.
After the walk, many of us went to Birds and Beans Café to warm up with a coffee!

By the end of the walk, we had tallied 22 species. Here is the full list:

Canada Goose
Mute Swan
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Mallard
American Black Duck
Redhead
Greater Scaup
Lesser Scaup
Long-tailed Duck
Bufflehead
