April 2026 Bird Walk
group-at-pond

Julia Zarankin led a very wet walk on April 25th. We have rescheduled a walk once before due to extreme weather, but this was the first time we have delayed one until later the same day. Heavy rain in the morning was forecast to let up by midday, and, for the most part, it did. We moved the start time from 9 am to 1 pm, and a dozen hardy souls stayed mostly dry with intermittent drizzle.
Birds are often quite active right after a rainfall. That didn’t really work out for us on Saturday, as there were almost certainly more birds present than we saw. White-throated Sparrows had just started to arrive in big numbers, and we found a large flock of swallows, but we struggled to find many of the expected species. The ground was completely saturated after several rainy days in the previous week, so some areas were simply too wet to enter.
Our April walks typically feature the greatest number of species, so while we might have hoped for more, 44 species was still a respectable total.
