Garth Riley lead our first Bird Walk since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic on November 6th at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Things were a little different, with masks, preregistration, and a strict limit on the number of participants. All the precautions worked well without being too onerous. The weather was beautiful, which as usual, meant that bird activity was relatively low.
As expected, we found a mix of year-round residents, early winter visitors and lingering summer species that haven’t flown south yet. We spent our time near the waterfront, where we expected to find the greatest variety of both waterfowl and land birds. Birding the wooded areas further north in the park is still challenging at this time of year, because most of the leaves are still on the trees.
Although the number of birds was low, we still managed to find 33 species plus 2 hybrids. Here is the list:
