Ross Harris lead our October 5th walk at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. It was a cool day with strong southeasterly winds. The wind made it very challenging to see birds in the trees and bushes. While this would normally have been a good time to search the bushes on the landfill area, we didn’t think we would find anything in that wind, so we headed inland looking for sheltered areas that might harbour some late warblers. We found a scattering of migrants but never came across any significant flock.
A highlight was an Eastern Screech Owl, invisible from all but one angle. (Thank you Stephan ... and the chickadees!) In the end, our group of 24 people found 34 species of birds. That didn’t come easily, as most birds weren’t very plentiful or cooperative.
